Compared to the nations of Europe and elsewhere, America has been extraordinarily good to the Jewish people and its Jewish citizens. Jews have returned the favor by making enormous contributions to American society. Still, prejudice against Jews has existed in the U.S. throughout its history. Unfortunately, it has been renewed and strengthened by an upsurge of Jew-hatred in recent years.
Quote: “In 1654, the Dutch governor, Peter Stuyvesant, singled out Jews as ‘deceitful’ and ‘very repugnant’ and sought to have them expelled. In the 19th century, the late historian John Higham observed, Americans united by little else — Kansas farmers, Cambridge intellectuals, and Manhattan day laborers — shared one great fantasy in common: they believed that Jews lay at the root of their problems.”
