The best-known incident involving antisemitism and actor, film director, producer, and screenwriter Mel Gibson took place on July 28, 2006, when Gibson was stopped by a sheriff’s deputy who suspected he was driving under the influence. Gibson went on an alcohol-fueled rant, which included an accusation that Jews were responsible for all the wars in the world. The episode was far from the only time Gibson’s true feelings about the Jewish people have been in the spotlight: See the articles and video linked below. Gibson, for his part, has denied he’s an antisemite.
Quote: “We were at a crowded party with one of my good friends, and Mel Gibson was smoking a cigar, and we’re all talking and he said to my friend, who’s gay, ‘Oh, wait, am I gonna get AIDS?’ ” Ryder said. “And then something came up about Jews, and he said, ‘You’re not an oven dodger, are you?’ ”
— Jewish actress Winona Ryder
