Rudolf Höss (November 25, 1901 – April 16, 1947) was a German SS officer, and from May 1940 until November 1943, the commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp. He is the main character depicted in the Oscar-nominated movie The Zone of Interest.
Höss tested and implemented means to accelerate Hitler’s order to systematically exterminate the Jewish population of Nazi-occupied Europe. He introduced the pesticide Zyklon B to be used in gas chambers where more than a million people were killed.
After the defeat of Nazi Germany and the end of World War II, he was convicted in Poland and executed for war crimes committed on the prisoners of the Auschwitz concentration camp and for his role in the Holocaust.

Quote: “One woman approached me as she walked past and, pointing to her four children who were manfully helping the smallest ones over the rough ground, whispered: ‘How can you bring yourself to kill such beautiful, darling children? Have you no heart at all?’ One old man, as he passed me, hissed: ‘Germany will pay a heavy penance for this mass murder of the Jews.’ His eyes glowed with hatred as he said this. Nevertheless he walked calmly into the gas chamber.”
