In December 2019, The Atlantic magazine published an in-depth article on the fear gripping American Jews in the wake of antisemitic incidents that resulted in serious injuries and deaths. Although memories of the horrific attacks may be fading, we must not forget that dark, frightening period. (A Jersey City kosher market, pictured, was the scene of one of the worst attacks.) The article — “American Jews Are Terrified” by Emma Green — is linked below.
Quote: “Jewish people know: When a vandal desecrates a synagogue with a swastika, he typically doesn’t distinguish between one that’s Orthodox or Reform. This is one of the hallmarks of anti-Semitism: Ultimately, it doesn’t differentiate between your level of observance or your degree of Zionism.” | “There’s a reason why Jewish people feel afraid. The threats against them are undeniable. In this moment, whether you’re a Democrat or Republican, whether you like the president or don’t like the president — I don’t think that should be the point. It should be nonpartisan to push back against prejudice.”
— Jonathan Greenblatt, National Director and CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, in The Atlantic
