On Aug. 4, 2020, Beirut, Lebanon was rocked by a enormous blast considered to be among the most powerful nonnuclear explosions in history. Large swaths of the city were destroyed, some 200 people were killed, thousands were injured, and 300,000 residents were left homeless.
The cause of the explosion appeared to be 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored in a warehouse at the port of Beirut — a extremely dangerous situation neglected by Lebanese authorities for years. Yet without even a shred of evidence, some have concocted a conspiracy theory that blames Israel (and the United States) for the blast.
Quote: “Iranian officials again accused Thursday both Israel and the US of standing behind a massive explosion that hit Beirut’s port Tuesday and sent shockwaves across the Lebanese capital, killing dozens of people and wounding thousands. Secretary of Iran’s Expediency Council Mohsen Rezaei said, ‘The incident is consistent with the US and Israeli behavior in the past years,’ adding that Beirut’s explosion is greatly suspicious.”
