The Nazi regime in Germany constructed thousands of concentration camps, but perhaps none strikes terror the way the very name Auschwitz does. (Auschwitz was actually a complex of 40 camps.) It is estimated that over a period of just two years, more than a million human beings — the vast majority of them Jews — perished at the camp. In January 2020, more than 45 world leaders marked the 75th anniversary of the notorious camp’s liberation, in a moving ceremony in Jerusalem. See the first video linked below.
Quotes: “Antisemitism and racism are malignant diseases that destroy and tear apart societies and nations from within. And no, no democracy is immune.” — Reuven Rivlin, President of Israel | “I stand before you all as president of Germany and I stand here laden with the heavy history of the historical burden of guilt. Yet, at the same time, my heart is filled with gratitude — gratitude for the hands of the survivors stretched out to us, gratitude for the new trust given to us by people in Israel and across the world.” — Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of Germany
