UPDATE: Simple human compassion leads us to extend our best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery to President Trump, the First Lady, and everyone else in the Administration and government who contracts COVID-19.
A recent article in The Washington Post by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Greg Miller asserted that following a phone call with Jewish leaders, President Donald Trump was overheard muttering Jews “are only in it for themselves” and calling into question Jewish Americans’ loyalty to the United States. (That is a longstanding antisemitic trope.) The sources behind the report were not named, in keeping with the reluctance of Administration officials to go on the record for fear of presidential retribution.
The claim in the Post article is in keeping with a number of antisemitic statements by Trump (see links below). Furthermore, it is consistent with what Mary Trump, his niece, has said.
Quote: “Anti-Semitism comes in many forms. Trump is absolutely not an eliminationist anti-Semite, like Hitler. In some ways he admires Jews and attributes to them traits of selfishness and shrewdness that recommend them as underlings and partners. Like Richard Nixon, he is able to combine personal anti-Semitism with a public record of support for Israel. What can’t be plausibly denied, however, is that he is an anti-Semite.”
