The Zone of Interest — a recently released movie directed by Jewish-British filmmaker Jonathan Glazer — is a departure from traditional Holocaust cinematic fare. It does not visually depict atrocities committed in Auschwitz, the infamous Nazi extermination camp. Instead, it tells the story of camp commandant Rudolf Höss and his family building a seemingly idyllic life right next to Auschwitz — despite occasionally hearing gunshots and screams emanating from the camp, seeing flames rising from the crematoria, and smelling the stench of burning human flesh. By all accounts, it is a powerful study of the banality of evil.
Quote: “The Zone of Interest premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on 19 May 2023 to critical acclaim, winning both the Grand Prix and FIPRESCI Prize. It went on to be named Best Film by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, selected as one of the top-five international films of 2023 by the National Board of Review, and chosen as the British entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards.”
